About The Artifice

Founded in 2018 as an experimental exhibition program inside Hapeville’s Arches Brewing, The Artifice has evolved into an artist-led curatorial platform presenting bold, unconventional contemporary work across Atlanta and beyond.

Directed by artist, designer, and curator Thomas Arthur Schaefer, The Artifice has produced more than 40 exhibitions and showcased over 300 artists—from intimate solo installations to large-scale thematic group shows. From the beginning, the belief has remained simple: meaningful art requires both courage and structure.

Today, The Artifice operates as a mobile and adaptive framework for cultural production—balancing risk with rigor, experimentation with stewardship, and independence with long-term vision.

We are building something intended to endure.
