About The Artifice

A Home for Bold, Unconventional Art

 

What began in 2018 as an art program inside Hapeville’s Arches Brewing and evolved into The Artifice in 2025 has been a home for bold ideas and unconventional exhibitions from the very start. Curated and directed by artist, designer, and curator Thomas Arthur Schaefer, The Artifice has showcased the work of more than 300 artists across 40+ exhibitions — from intimate solo installations to large-scale, thematic group shows.

Our history is rooted in experimentation. We’ve transformed brewery walls, warehouse spaces, and unexpected corners of the city into vibrant, temporary galleries. Each exhibition is curated with a deep respect for artistic vision and a willingness to push beyond traditional boundaries, creating an environment where artists are encouraged to take risks and audiences are invited to see art in new ways.

The Artifice is more than a gallery — it’s a living project. We value the interplay of fine art, pop culture, and the subversive, often weaving together history, humor, and cultural critique. As we move toward establishing a permanent home, we remain committed to being a space where artists of all backgrounds can connect, challenge, and inspire.
