Dan Curran

Tropical Visions presents a body of richly textured landscape paintings by Daniel Curran inspired by the tropical environments of Kauai, Hawaii—a place closely connected to the beginning of his life as a painter.

Curran first began seriously exploring painting while living on Kauai, where the island's dramatic coastlines, mountains, vegetation, water, and shifting atmosphere became some of his earliest subjects. Years later, these landscapes continue to occupy his imagination. Tropical Visions returns to that visual memory, translating the experience of the island through saturated color, exaggerated light, and heavily worked surfaces.

The paintings move freely between observation and recollection. Brilliant pink and violet skies meet electric blue water; mountains and shorelines are built from dense passages of green, orange, black, and white. Curran does not attempt to reproduce the landscape literally. Instead, he amplifies it, allowing color and texture to carry the sensation and emotional memory of a place.

That physicality is central to Curran's practice. Drawing equally from painting and sculpture, he builds dimensional foundations on the canvas before developing the image through successive layers of acrylic color. The resulting surfaces project outward, turning clouds, waves, mountains, and vegetation into accumulations of material as much as representations of nature. Curran has described many of his paintings as containing more than forty individual layers of color, with much of their progression determined intuitively as he works.

Across Tropical Visions, landscape becomes both place and memory. These are not simply pictures of paradise, but a return to an environment that helped shape Curran's artistic language. The island is remembered through paint: heightened, layered, tactile, and alive.
