Real Fantastic brings together paintings by James C. Gray and Andrew M. Muñoz, two artists whose work occupies the shifting territory between the recognizable and the imagined.

Gray's paintings begin with the physical world. Historic theaters, roadside signs, neon marquees, and remnants of commercial architecture are rendered with an extraordinary attention to structure, light, color, and surface. His subjects are real places and objects, yet isolated and enlarged through painting, they take on an almost improbable presence. Familiar pieces of the American landscape become monuments—simultaneously documentary, nostalgic, and strangely larger than life.

Muñoz moves through a darker and more ambiguous space. His nighttime cityscapes and anonymous figures emerge from fields of black, gray, and muted color, often obscured, fragmented, or without recognizable faces. Bodies become gestures and silhouettes; illumination appears as halos, windows, streetlight, and—in one work—actual neon. These are environments that feel recognizable without ever becoming entirely knowable.

Placed together, the two bodies of work complicate the distinction between realism and fantasy. Gray heightens the observable world until reality begins to feel theatrical, while Muñoz constructs imagined scenes that retain the emotional weight and atmosphere of lived experience.

Both artists are ultimately concerned with light. Gray paints the glow of signage and the visual spectacle of illuminated architecture. Muñoz uses light as something more elusive—a beacon, an interruption, a halo, or an unexplained presence emerging from darkness. In both, illumination transforms what surrounds it.

Real Fantastic exists within that uncertainty. What appears real may become strange through sustained attention, while something invented can feel entirely familiar. The exhibition asks not where reality ends and fantasy begins, but how easily one can become the other.
