One Hundred Miles

One Hundred Miles is a two-artist exhibition featuring Benjamin Galland and Kurtis Schumm, presented by The Artifice in Atlanta, GA.
Through aerial photography and contemporary painting, Galland and Schumm offer two distinct perspectives on Georgia's coast—from the sweeping geography of its marshlands and waterways to the intimate experience of life within the landscape.
Together, their work presents the coast as both place and experience: approximately one hundred miles of extraordinary natural complexity seen from above and from within.

One Hundred Miles brings together the work of Georgia coastal artists Benjamin Galland and Kurtis Schumm in a shared portrait of a landscape defined by water, marsh, barrier islands, vegetation, and the communities that exist among them.
Working in photography and painting respectively, Galland and Schumm approach the Georgia coast from dramatically different perspectives. Galland's aerial photographs pull the viewer upward, revealing winding waterways, vast expanses of salt marsh, islands, and tidal systems as interconnected forms. From this distance, familiar landscapes become almost abstract—patterns created by water, vegetation, light, and time.
Schumm's paintings move in the opposite direction. His fluid figurative works place the viewer within the landscape, where bodies, plants, sunlight, and coastal atmosphere overlap. Painted through translucent and layered surfaces, his figures feel less separate from their surroundings than absorbed into them. The coast becomes not simply a place to observe, but something inhabited and experienced.
Together, the two bodies of work move continuously between distance and intimacy. Galland reveals the extraordinary scale and structure of the coastal environment while Schumm considers the human experience within it. Photography records what is there; painting allows memory, sensation, and interpretation to enter.
The exhibition takes its title from Georgia's approximately one hundred miles of coastline—a relatively small geographic span containing an extraordinary concentration of marshlands, waterways, barrier islands, wildlife, and human history. Galland's own work has long been connected to conservation and visual storytelling surrounding this landscape.
One Hundred Miles ultimately asks us to look at the Georgia coast from more than one vantage point: from above and from within, as geography and as home, as something beautiful to experience and something worth understanding and protecting.
