Howard Finster was a visionary American folk artist, preacher, and cultural icon whose work transformed Southern self-taught art into an internationally recognized movement. Based in Georgia, Finster created more than 46,000 works throughout his lifetime, blending religious imagery, hand-painted text, pop culture references, politics, and personal revelation into a singular and deeply influential artistic practice.

Best known for his sprawling environmental artwork Paradise Garden in Summerville, Georgia, Finster approached art as both spiritual mission and public communication. His paintings, sculptures, signs, and architectural constructions merged folk art, outsider art, and visionary art into immersive spaces filled with biblical messages, symbolic imagery, and handmade invention.

Finster gained widespread recognition in the 1980s through collaborations with bands including R.E.M. and Talking Heads, introducing millions to self-taught Southern art through iconic album covers and music-related projects. Despite international acclaim, Finster remained committed to creating art rooted in faith, accessibility, and direct human connection, leaving behind one of the most significant legacies in American folk and outsider art history.
