Chester Hewell is an American folk pottery artist known for his expressive Southern stoneware and highly recognizable grotesque face jugs. Born in Georgia in 1950, Hewell became associated with the continuation of traditional North Georgia pottery practices, embracing historic forms, hand-built character vessels, and old-style glazing techniques rooted in regional folk ceramic traditions.

Working within the lineage of Southern face jug pottery, Hewell developed a distinctive visual language marked by exaggerated facial features, sculptural distortion, and bold personality. His works balance humor, unease, and craftsmanship, transforming functional pottery traditions into highly collectible contemporary folk art objects.

Known for both traditional vessels and vividly expressive face jugs, Hewell’s ceramics remain widely sought after by collectors of American folk pottery and Southern vernacular art.
